Frequently asked questions about therapy
What is Metacognitive Therapy (MCT)?
Metacognitive Therapy (MCT) focuses on how you relate to your thoughts, rather
than the content of your thoughts. People rarely become trapped by negative
thoughts themselves. Rather, emotional difficulties are maintained by repeatedly
analysing, worrying about or trying to control those thoughts in unhelpful ways.
The aim of MCT is to help you step out of the thinking patterns that maintain
emotional distress. You learn to let thoughts come and go without becoming caught
up in them, helping to reduce anxiety, stress and low mood in a more direct and
lasting way.

How do I know whether MCT is right for me?
There is no requirement to decide in advance which type of therapy is right for you – we will explore that together during our initial sessions.
Metacognitive Therapy (MCT) is particularly helpful if you find yourself becoming
caught up in worry, rumination or persistent patterns of negative thinking that are
difficult to step away from on your own.
Sometimes, however, what people are looking for is not a structured course of
therapy, but the opportunity to speak with an experienced psychologist as a
professional sounding board. This can be particularly valuable during periods of
personal or professional change. Such consultations may involve three to five
sessions, or continue for longer, depending on your needs and preferences.
How many sessions does MCT involve, and what can I expect from therapy?
MCT typically involves around ten sessions. We usually meet weekly at the beginning of therapy, before moving to fortnightly sessions later on. The pace of therapy is something we decide together, based on what best suits your needs. For most people, therapy lasts around three to four months. However, every individual is different, and if you would prefer a longer period of support, we can tailor the duration accordingly.
How soon can I get an appointment?
I am usually able to offer an initial appointment within a few weeks. Choosing private psychological therapy often means considerably shorter waiting times than those typically available through public healthcare. Please get in touch, and I will be happy to suggest a suitable appointment.
How do I know whether you are the right psychologist for me?
Taking the first step towards therapy can feel daunting. Meeting someone you have never met before and talking about personal difficulties is a big step for many people. I work with people of all ages and from a wide range of backgrounds and life circumstances. One thing I am often told by former clients is that I am easy to talk to and that I have a way of making therapy feel straightforward and manageable. If you are unsure whether I am the right psychologist for you, we can simply begin with an initial consultation and see how it feels. Feeling comfortable with your psychologist is an important part of successful therapy.
Do I need to prepare before my first appointment?
There is no need to prepare anything in particular before your first appointment. During our first session, we will talk about the difficulties that have brought you to therapy and discuss how Metacognitive Therapy (MCT) may be the best way to help. If you would like to make a few notes beforehand – for example about previous therapy or anything else you would like me to know – you are very welcome to do so. Otherwise, there is no need to prepare. We will simply take things one step at a time during our first session.
Can I bring someone with me to a therapy session?
Absolutely. Some people find it reassuring to bring a partner, family member or close friend to their first session, and that is entirely your choice. There are also occasions when I may suggest inviting someone close to you to join one or two sessions, if I believe their involvement could support the therapeutic process. Whether you choose to do so is always entirely up to you.
Do you work with children and young people?
I work with young people from the age of 15, with consent from parent(s) or legal guardian(s). For clients under the age of 18, it is particularly common for one or both parents to be involved in therapy, both during the initial consultation and later in the process. This is always done in a way that suits the young person, is clinically appropriate, and respects their autonomy. The nature of parental involvement varies from person to person, and is something we decide together when planning therapy.
Do you keep clinical records?
Yes. In accordance with the Swedish Patient Data Act, I keep confidential clinical
records.
My records are completely separate from the electronic record systems used within
the Swedish public healthcare system. Healthcare providers within the public system
cannot access my records or see that you have attended therapy with me.
Can I go to therapy online?
Yes, I offer therapy both on site at my clinic in Lund and online.
What are your fees?
The fee is SEK 1675 per session. Each session lasts approximately 45–50 minutes.
One of the advantages of Metacognitive Therapy (MCT) is that it is often a shorter
course of therapy than many other approaches, making it a cost-effective option for
many people. This is one of the reasons why I have chosen to specialise in MCT.
At the start of therapy, I will always give you my assessment of the likely length of
treatment, so that you have a clear idea of what to expect.
For clinicians seeking supervision
Do you offer supervision in both MCT and CBT?
I provide supervision in Metacognitive Therapy for therapists who are registered
MCT-I practitioners or currently undertaking MCT training. I have many years of
experience supervising MCT therapists and serve as a supervisor on the MCT
Masterclass programme at the MCT Institute.
I also provide supervision in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), drawing on more
than 15 years of experience supervising clinicians working in mental health services,
primary care, occupational health and other clinical settings. I work with both newly
qualified and experienced therapists.
Jag handleder även i KBT, men över 15 års erfarenhet av KBT-handledning, i psykiatri, primärvård, företagshälsovård, med mera, för både nyutbildade och seniora terapeuter.
Do you also offer individual supervision?
Yes. Supervision can be provided individually or in groups and is always centred on
real clinical cases and the challenges you encounter in your practice.
The format is tailored to your needs, with the aim of providing practical guidance that
is directly applicable in your day-to-day clinical work. We also take into account what
works best in terms of your schedule and the frequency of supervision.
If you run your own private practice and are looking for occasional, just-in-time
supervision rather than regular scheduled sessions, I am happy to accommodate
that as well.
Do you also offer supervision when the focus is on the therapist rather than
the therapeutic approach?
As therapists, we are our own most important clinical tool. Sometimes, what you need from supervision is not guidance on a particular therapeutic approach, but a space to reflect on your own clinical work, professional development, or the challenges you encounter as a therapist. With 25 years of clinical experience and more than 15 years as a supervisor, I tailor supervision to your individual needs and stage of professional development. If you are interested in MCT but are not sure whether it is the right approach for you, we can discuss this together before starting therapy. I am usually able to offer an initial appointment within a few weeks.

Where it suits you best
Onsite
My office is located in central Lund, just north of the city park (Stadsparken).
Online
If you are further away, it is an excellent alternative to have your treatment online. I use the meeting platform Whereby, which I find smoother than the alternatives, and meets high standards of security with end-to-end encryption.
